Where to find official Massachusetts high school power rankings
A short reader guide to the MIAA's official power rankings: where they live, how they differ from media polls, and what to check before you share a number.
By Boston Sports News · Published
Every fall, parents, players and fans ask the same question: where does my team actually stand? In Massachusetts, the official answer for MIAA member schools comes from the MIAA's own power rankings page, not from social media posts or media polls.
Official ratings vs. editorial polls
- Official power rankings are published by the MIAA, the governing body for Massachusetts high school athletics. They are the figures to rely on when the question is tournament standing.
- Editorial polls and top-10 lists are opinions from newspapers, websites or coaches. They can be useful conversation starters, but they are not official and can disagree with the MIAA's figures.
Boston Sports News does not publish its own top-10 lists or current placements in this guide. For the latest numbers, go straight to the source.
How to read the official page
- Pick the sport. Rankings are published separately for each sport.
- Check the season and year. Make sure you are looking at the current season, not an archived one.
- Choose the division. Teams are compared within their own division, so a ranking only means something next to teams in the same division.
- Note the release date. Rankings change during the season. When you share a ranking, include the date it was published.
Before you share a ranking
If a post or screenshot claims a team is "ranked No. 1," ask: is it the MIAA's official ranking or a poll, which division, and as of what date? If those answers are missing, check the official page yourself.
